10 Must Reads This Summer If You're In Marketing and Sales

Happy 4th of July everyone...As of today we are officially one month away from DOYO Live. However we still have two-thirds of summer left, so let's not rush it. It's a great time to sit back, grab a lemonade or whatever you favorite adult beverage might be and open up a great book. Whether heading to the beach or the local pool, here are some of my favorites that I wanted to share with you.

#1 - Content Inc, by Joe Pulizzi

Content Inc. - Joe Pulizzi Content Inc. by Joe Pulizzi is a great read for anyone in marketing, learn the step-by-step process that will help your business develop a content marketing approach to gaining thought leadership in the market place and growing your business. #2 - 1776 by David McCullough























The true underdog story of an up-start nation going against the most powerful nation in the world at the time. Led by an unknown, un-tested, General George Washington and a militia made up of ordinary men who went on to accomplish un-ordinary feats. The foundation of our great nation, celebrated in 1776. At one time or another in business, life, etc. we've all consider how easy it would be to just give up, at least I have...But this book is a great reminder of perseverance and over coming great obstacles in order to succeed!


#3 - The Sandler Rules - Adapted by David Mattson

DOYO Live is about education, not just marketing, but sales as well. We have a track dedicated to sales. I've been through a lot of sales training methodology in my life. Probably the best were psychology courses in college. The Socratic Method of answering a question with a question, letting the other person down the path of self discovery, solving problems with solutions not products. Whether you are into spin selling, the challenger sale, Sadler, solution selling...Coming back to the fundamentals is always a helpful reminder. This is a great quick read that will help you sell more.


#4 - Grilling for Life by Bobby Flay

While there are books on marketing, there's also examples of it as well. Bobby Flay's (Content Inc.) model of TV, expanding into books, products, etc. has helped hime to gain millions of followers and build a cooking empire. It all started in his restaurants. I combine two of my passions. I love to cook and I love marketing. This is cool because you can see the model working and of course the grill is such an important aspect of summer. Enjoy!

#5 - The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort

Before there was the movie, there was the book. While Marty Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio nailed it...Reading it off the pages from Jordan Belfort himself is raw and real. If you've not seen the movie this is a must.


#6 - Detroit by Charlie LeDuff

Charlie LeDuff absolutely kills it in this snippet of history called Detroit. A great example as well as the Content Inc. model. Charlie writes for a Detroit newspaper, documenting the historical collapse of this Great American City. He parlayed his efforts in the newspaper to a book to being on Fox News. It can happen, all while doing some real, this is a riveting, very quick and maybe the most important book to read on the list!


#7 - Rules for Renegades by Christina Comaford-Lynch

Truth be told I judged this book by the cover and completely lucked out. It's a great read for any aspiring entrepreneur or something she discusses in the book an "intra-preneur." Of how you can led teams, the cautionary story of being A-type personality and working yourself into exhaustion for success, the early days of Microsoft (very cool). I love this book and think you will as well.


#8 - #AskGaryVee by Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk is white hot right now but been around for a very long time. I really loved Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, a great read that I use in my social media marketing classes at Youngstown State University and lays out the fundamentals of social media marketing. This installation takes stories from his Ask GaryVee Show that plays all over the web. Gary hustles, I mean he really hustles. There's people and as I write this on July 4th...Often times I'm pulling 12 to 15 hour days, especially to pull together DOYO Live. Gary's on planes, trains and meetings dropping knowledge on modern day marketing. Pick it up...It's real and he brings it!!!


#9 - The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki

If you don't know Guy, he's a marketing legend. Having had responsibility for putting Apple on the map, that's right Apple. You know Steve Jobs, but Guy's the real-deal. This is a book I come back to read on the regular. Full of great information and all the things you need to consider when launching a successful start up. It will motivate you and scare you, as it should, all at the same time of going into business for yourself.


#10 - The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss

Not sure if I've been able to find-a-way to work 4 hours per week and be successful but that's all this book is about. It's about changing your views on life and business. How to free up more time to enjoy work-life balance, be courageous, take chances and look at things in a different light. The ideas of outsourcing your own job will blow your mind.
