How many social media networks do you belong to? Two? Four? More?  Do you even know why?

The truth is, the more social media platforms you join, the more it becomes increasingly complex to understand and manage them all with consistency.  Which often leads to creating a presence in multiple areas that could damage or confuse your brand.  Every platform is not made equal, nor is it suitable for every industry to have a presence on every platform.  In fact, attempting to market in all places, at all times can lead to loads of social media anxiety and frustrations.

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Mobile said it best: “Complexity is your enemy. Any fool can make something complicated. It is hard to keep things simple.” And social media is not any different, it is a process that is best served simple, which helps to develop and maintain a consistent brand presence.

Although social media can be complicated, the key to marketing effectively lies in the ability to determine which environments to best thrive in, which strategies work best in those environments and how to implement those methods to alleviate aggravation and increase rewards. The key to social media marketing success is knowing in which environments you thrive, so that you create the right message, to the right people on the right platform.

Of course, there are hundreds of other social platforms out there, and yet hundreds more being created. Do you have to maintain a presence on all of them? The answer is no.

The key to simplifying social media marketing doesn’t lie in how many places you can be, but rather in selecting the right place to provide the right message, at the right time. To do this, you have to know and understand the environment, develop a strategy and execute tactics that can help create and maintain consistency in the presence of your brand. Only choose platforms that directly meet your marketing goals and target audiences, so that you can free up the rest of your time to be more productive.

Sherron is the founder and CEO of the P3 Solution, a full-service marketing and communications firm that specializes in providing simple strategy, design and social media marketing solutions for small businesses, non-profit organizations, associations, and entrepreneurs.  She has built her firm around the principle of “marketing simple,” which instructs clients to embrace simplified methods to promote their business. She is also the creator and host of “Market Simple: The Summit” (www.imarketsimple.com) – an annual, full-day workshop designed to help businesses learn how to effectively create and execute their marketing and communication efforts successfully.

She is also a monthly columnist for SmartCEO and Black Enterprise, where she writes articles on how to streamline the use of social media in order to make a more effective impact.

Sherron has been a business communication professor for over a decade at Trinity University in Washington, DC and Stevenson University in Baltimore. She has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses in:  Public Speaking, Introduction to Mass Communication, Theory and Practice of Marketing, Gender and Communication, Leadership, Introduction to Women Studies, Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Consumer Behavior, Advertising and Promotion, Social Media Marketing, and Public Relations. Sherron enjoys instructing students and discovering inquisitive, future leaders for the marketing and communication industry. Sherron has a Masters of Arts in communications and a Bachelor of Arts in communications with a double minor in business and media technology.
