Without warning, I recently saw a Facebook Fan Page I’d built and leveraged for several years removed and deleted.

During the chaotic experience, I learned several things about Facebook from a customer service perspective:

I had no warning or opportunity to fix whatever was wrong with my page – it was simply gone. I didn’t know about it until I logged into Facebook and tried to access it.
Despite the fact that I’ve spent thousands of dollars on Facebook Ads using that page since 2012, I was unable to find a phone number or Live Chat option to reach someone about the issue.

Three Big Ideas That Will Drive Digital Marketing in 2017 | Huffington Post

As brands look at their planning for 2017, it’s time to ask which consumer trends are going to drive next year’s most effective digital marketing strategies? There are three big ideas that will drive digital marketing strategies in the coming year. They have to do with the changing demands of today’s digital consumer.

So what are these “big ideas?”:

• Health and fitness – Consumers are aware of the negative impacts of an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle. They’re defining health differently, not just as the absence of sickness, but as positive choices they can make that will help them live a healthier life. What’s more, they’re seeing tech as part of the problem, but also as part of the solution.
• Community – In a technology filled world, there’s a generation of customers defined not by their age but by their desire to make human connections with others in their physical, digital and virtual communities.
• Convergence – Recent studies indicate that adults in 2015 spent nearly double the amount of time with mobile digital media that they did in 2010, for a total of nearly 10 hours a day of screen time. They’re overwhelmed by choices online and offline. At the same time, data and technology are converging and enabling digital marketers to better understand customer journeys and deliver on customer expectations for a cohesive experience across mobile, online and offline channels.

Let’s look more closely at some of these big ideas and how to use them in your digital marketing efforts.

Health and Fitness

Consumers’ adoption of mobile devices, apps and platforms might seem at odds with trends toward healthier living and physical activity, and desire for community. But after years of negative attention to physical and health issues brought on by poor diet and lack of exercise, consumers understand how their lifestyle choices – including mobile and digital use – are affecting their health.

This understanding plays into the increasing popularity of wearables. Wearables like the Fitbit or Apple Watch allow consumers to track health information and movement; in the case of Apple Watch, they can perform a number of other functions as well, such as keeping in touch while on the go, without the inconvenience of having to carry a phone.

Wearables provide data about users’ location and activities throughout the day, and can even provide insight into their state of mind. Digital marketers should look at how health, fitness and emotional data can be used to help solve problems or provide rewards for consumers. For instance, marketers could deliver a coupon for a certain number of miles, increasing sales while also supporting healthy living.

Building Community On and Off Line

Google recently studied consumers who are actively engaged as consumers, technology adopters and brand advocates online. According to Google, these “Gen C” consumers are not defined by age but by their activities online. They are not passive consumers, rather they are driven by the urge to create,connect and build community. They’re two to three times more likely to buy online than other consumers, and up to nine times as likely to participate in online communities as other consumers.

How can brands engage these consumers in 2017? Marketing hubs, online destinations where consumers can find not just content but a sense of community, are one strategy digital marketers can leverage to fulfill consumers’ desire for community while telling brand stories and meeting strategic goals.

Augmented reality games and apps may be another tool to engage Gen C. The recent popularity of Pokemon Go demonstrated the promise of augmented reality as a community building tool. Games that can be played in the physical world and that invite interaction between players or brands are ways digital marketers can use augmented reality to develop community.

Everything Must Converge

Consumers have repeatedly demonstrated an appetite for the idea of convergence, of being able to do more than one thing at a time. That’s the reason mobile phones and devices are also cameras. Consumers want technology to simplify their lives, not make it more complicated, and they want experiences that work with them across multiple platforms.

We can leverage this in our digital marketing efforts in 2017 by looking at how technology and data can create a better ecosystem for understanding the customer and making their life easier.

Big data and the Internet of things will enable marketers gather and analyze more complete and better information about their customers and how they use products and technology, leading to insights about how to deliver better on customer needs. Omnichannel marketing will continue to be a key digital marketing strategy in 2017 to support the customer’s desire to easily research, make decisions and take action. Digital marketers should constantly be seeking ways to better understand and support the customer as he moves across platforms.

Successful digital marketing in 2017 should understand what big ideas are driving customers to visit their web or mobile site, or ultimately buy their product. What is the larger purpose? When marketers understand this purpose, they can employ the rights strategies to support the customer journey.

7 Amazing Tips to Help Boost A Blog Post’s Organic Ranking

If you are currently running a content marketing campaign, I’m sure that you have written and published a good amount of blogs. But are they bringing in traffic? You can publish a great piece of content, but if no one ever reads it your time and energy will have been for nothing. So what can you do about it? Get that post to rank well organically!

Before I get ahead of myself, not every post will have the potential to rank well. That’s why the first step to boosting a blog to the top of page 1, is to decide which blogs have the chance to succeed.

So which blog should you boost?
First things first, Google the target keyword in your blog post title and assess the competition around that keyword/ topic. What kind of sites are ranking first? If the top position holders are high authority sites such as New York Times, Forbes,, or (generally speaking) websites with .edu or .gov urls, chances are your blog is not going to out rank them. Brian Dean at Backlinko explains it best: “All things being equal, a page on an authoritative domain will rank higher than a page on a domain with less authority.”

With this in mind, try to choose a blog that has less competition around its target keyword. A great tip is to try ranking for a keyword that your competitor is already ranking for! It’s also worth noting that you want to know where your blog is currently ranking. Bottom of page 1? Page 2? Page 3? You will want to focus on a blog that has already been indexed by Google in the first 2-3 pages. If a blog already ranks well, it’s easier to push it higher than pushing a blog that is not on Google’s radar.

How to boost a blog’s ranking
Now that you have chosen a blog that has the power to rank well, how do you boost your current ranking? To help supercharge your blog’s ranking, follow these 7 tips:

1) Increase blog ranking with optimization

As a good inbound (or otherwise) marketer, I know this is the most obvious tip when it comes to helping your blog rank organically. At the risk of sounding repetitive I will just list the basics:

Keyword optimization – Focus on long-tail keywords, and use your keyword along with synonyms naturally throughout the blog. Do not stuff your blog with keywords!
Title optimization – Include your keyword (as far left as possible) in the title, and keep it under 60 characters.
Meta description optimization – Include your keyword, keep it under 160 characters and write a clear, engaging description of what your blog is about.
URL optimization – Findings show shorter, keyword rich URLs rank higher.
Image optimization – Don’t forget your images! Include alt text that includes keywords/ synonyms.
Link optimization – Link internally when appropriate and use external links to back up research and help increase the authority of the article.

2) Increase blog ranking with external links

External linking is something I touched on in Tip #1, but I would like to go into a little more depth. Although Google has somewhat denied that linking externally is a ranking signal, a study done by Reboot shows a correlation between a page’s external (outgoing) links and its search rankings. Since the study positively correlates high authority sites helping a page’s SEO, it’s important to include these links in the blog post you’re trying to boost rankings for.

3) Increase blog ranking with backlinks from authoritative sites

Keep in mind, backlinks that come from aged domains hold more power than those that come from new domains. For this reason, link outreach to authoritative sites is a great way to boost a blog post’s ranking. There are many ways in which you can get backlinks, but here are a few to keep in mind:

Email outreach – Start an email outreach program that targets websites that relate to your blog topic and asks for a backlink.
Social sharing outreach – Don’t have the contact information you need for an email? You can reach out to authoritative sites through social & blog commenting or messaging.
Guest posting on authoritative industry sites – This may take some email outreach to inquire about guest posting, but is a great way to get a backlink.
4) Increase blog ranking with semantic keywords

Semantics is the study of meaning, and is how someone interprets a word. In today’s semantic search you need to have a database of keywords full of meaning that deciphers different contexts. So semantic keywords (aka LSI keywords), are keywords that relate to your main keyword.

For example imagine someone searched using the word “crash”. Do they mean an accident, a stock market drop, attend an event without an invitation, or a way to describe a sound?

As a part of Google’s algorithm, semantic search is used to allow Google to understand how to interpret a search based on the searcher’s intent. By using semantic keywords in your blog, you can help Google recognize what your content is about and if it relates to a search. These keywords may not have the highest search volume, like the keyword you chose to optimize your blog for, but they will help increase relevancy.

Example semantic keyword phrases to the search “avoid a car crash”:

5) Increase blog ranking with syndication

Content syndication is where a blog (or other piece of content) is featured on a popular website that relates to your industry. By syndicating your blog, you are able to get it out to a larger audience, one in which you may have never reached without syndication. There are many content syndication networks you can use, but it is up to you to find the best industry related websites in your field.

For example, I’m a contributor on the site where my content reaches a greater audience than the subscribers on our agency blog. Remember, the blog you choose to syndicate should include a link that directs back to your website so not only will you get a backlink, but the traffic that goes along with it!

6) Increase blog ranking with social signals

As with most aspects of Google’s algorithm, the search giant has never come out and admitted that social signals are a ranking factor. So this one has always been debatable, however case studies have shown correlations with increased social signals and a jump in ranking. Not only did these case studies show higher ranking, but they also show an increase in traffic! That being said, promoting your blog on social media and getting likes, comments, retweets, plus 1’s etc. should be added to the to do list.
7) Increase blog ranking by Increasing Click Through Rate

Click through rate (CTR) is a user interaction signal that helps tell Google this blog is worth reading. So how do you help increase the organic CTR of your blog? One of the easiest changes you can make is to improve the blog title. After all, when it comes to the internet you can judge a book by it’s cover…or at least an article by it’s title. Update your title to something that will attract readers and make them want to click, while keeping it under 60 characters.

You got to implement strategy, test it, manage it, tweak it…I’m constantly tinkering with the digital strategy. Everything changes daily, that’s going to be a given. So you cannot just read or watch the next latest and greatest video. Be a doer.


The next in-regards to pro-bono work…Find the right mix. We all have to start someplace and free is sometimes your proving ground. Just keep in mind, try to move out of the freemium model asap! 


Mentors, although I’m writing a blog and giving advice. I’m not big on giving or taking advice. But I do study a lot. Mentors come in all sizes and shapes. Some will put your arm around you and go to lunch weekly. Others may just be someone you follow. I’m still in search of mine. In the meanwhile, check it out. Facebook for business, anticipating there will be a closed social media network offered by Facebook to allow businesses to communicate. While there are a number of products on the market today, with market share penetration. This is a game changer (in my opinion). 


People like to live in the Facebook ecosystem, it’s more efficient, although working in and on Facebook are two different things. Anyone that manages social media accounts for a living will tell you that it’s challenging to not get distracted when managing a Facebook account for business.


That said, I can see companies condensing to eliminate going back-and-forth between platforms. I’m am concerned about the intent of Facebook and whether or not the information (data) will be mined in order to feed their big marketing machine. 

It’s an interesting scenario for sure as Facebook is the Microsoft of social media platforms. Your thoughts?
